What are Minions and why are they so popular?

The origin and characteristics of Minions

Minions first appeared in the 2010 computer-animated comedy Despicable Me as the henchmen of the evil Gru, voiced by Steve Carell. They were created by Eric Guillon, Pierre Coffin, and Chris Renaud, who wanted to make them as simple and cute as possible. They were inspired by various sources, such as the Jawas from Star Wars, the Oompa-Loompas from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and yellow capsules from a video game.

Minions are biologically wired to seek out and serve the most terrible of villains; when they have no "boss" to serve, they become depressed and listless. They have one or two eyes, three fingers and toes per hand and foot, and no discernible noses or ears. They speak in an incomprehensible language called Minionese, which is a mix of various languages such as English, Spanish, French, Italian, Hindi, Japanese, Korean, Filipino, Russian, etc. They also love bananas, apples, ice cream, and other fruits. They are very childish, mischievous, loyal, curious, inventive, and funny. They often get into trouble because of their clumsiness or their fascination with anything new or shiny.

The global success and appeal of Minions

Minions quickly became the scene-stealers of Despicable Me and its sequels. They were given their own spin-off movie in 2015 called Minions, which tells their origin story from the beginning of life on Earth to their encounter with Gru in 1968. The movie was a huge hit, grossing over $1.5 billion worldwide. A sequel called Minions: The Rise of Gru was released in 2021, which shows how Gru became a supervillain with the help of the Minions. The movie broke the box office record for Independence Day weekend.

Minions have also become one of the most omnipresent internet memes. Their images are used to convey various jokes, quotes, emotions, opinions, or messages on social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, Tumblr, etc. They are often paired with mundane or innocuous captions that contrast with their chaotic or silly expressions. Some examples are:

  • "I'm not arguing. I'm just explaining why I'm right."

  • "I don't need Google. My wife knows everything."

  • "I'm not lazy. I'm on energy-saving mode."

  • "I love you more than coffee...but please don't make me prove it."

  • "Don't judge me. I was born to be awesome...not perfect."
